Mariah Carey seeks to revive R&B with new album
Mariah Carey is a diva on a mission to revive the genres that she holds closest to her heart. During a special conference call with music industry leaders, including The Lava Lizard, the legendary singer exclusively revealed that her new album is a testament to the power of Hip-Hop and R&B in this era of Dance music.
While chatting about her goals with this new album, which is due in the fall, Carey noted that she misses the days of the 1970s and 1980s when music had meaning. However, unlike her younger peer Melanie Amaro, who mixed meaningful lyrics with Dance production in an effort to score a mainstream hit with "Don't Fail Me Now", Carey wants to achieve success on her own terms.
"It would be incredible if we could bring that days when R&B records didn't have to crossover and just be hits on their own," Carey stated with her signature milky voice. "I remember back when those records were the soundtracks of people's lives."
s Yet, Carey isn't sniping at her contemporaries who have made attempts to crossover. Rather, she simply wants struggling R&B artists to return to their former glory. "It makes me sad that there are so many great R&B artists out there that don't get the chances that they should."
Quite hilariously, Carey spoke about the pressures to conform to the Dance music trends that she faced while recording her still-untitled new album and politely rejected any ideas that she would sellout. "I recorded like 120-something songs," she joked, "and I remember when I was pregnant with dem babies they only responded to the songs with the classic R&B feel."
Carey does, however, have a few new ideas for her upcoming comeback album. Although she refused to name any performers because she didn't want her material to be imitated, she did indicate that she finally got the chance to collaborate with artists with whom she had planned to work for many years.
Additionally, Carey positively responded to questions regarding the possibility of a duet with Drake or Frank Ocean and revealed her excitement to work with the "shapers" of the current industry. One such young artist is Meek Mill, and she nabbed a collaboration with him and Rick Ross for her new single, "Triumphant (Get 'Em)".
Several artists have been trying to revive the dying R&B genre but will Carey be the woman who I once predicted to save the genre? That remains to be seen but one thing is certain: she is determined to make her mark and open doors for the next generation. (The Lava Lizard)
