Malaysian promoter wins "bidding war" over concert

A Malaysian concert promoter has won the price-bidding war to get American pop diva Mariah Carey to perform here first, ahead of her world tour series in Singapore and the Philippines. According to an industry source, who declined to be named due to the sensitivity of the matter, the newcomer in the Malaysian concert circuit has secured a mega deal amid cut-throat competition to have Carey kicking off the Southeast Asian leg of her world tour in Kuala Lumpur on October 22 in Stadium Merdeka.

"KL will be her first stop - even though Singapore is unhappy with her management's decision to have her show in the island republic two days after KL," the source said. It is understood that Carey price's is not less than US$1mil (RM3.2mil), which was what she was paid when she performed here in 2004.

The Grammy award winner, known for her five-octave vocal range and monster hits like Hero, Dream Lover, One Sweet Day, Emotions, Vision Of Love, Fantasy and Bye Bye, has decided to launch her world tour in Asia before the United States. She will do a show in China before heading to our shores.

Carey's world tour is in support of her latest studio effort, Me, I Am Mariah... The Elusive Chanteuse. Details of her eagerly awaited concert will be announced soon. Carey's first performance here was amid controversy over her sexy image, with members from Islamist party PAS marching outside Stadium Merdeka in protest. The obliging pop superstar, however, stunned her critics by dressing down for her show and abiding by the Malaysian concert rules and regulations.
