Mariah's suicide bid

Mariah Carey's spokeswoman Cindi Berger has claimed reports that the 31-year-old singer has tried to commit suicide are "completely untrue" but confirmed that Carey has had an "emotional and physical breakdown". Berger revealed that Mariah Carey is "under psychiatric care" at an undisclosed hospital. The singer is suffering from 'extreme exhaustion' but Berger claims that the cuts to her body were not deliberately inflicted. "She did break some dishes and glasses and she may have stepped on them," Berger said.

Carey checked herself into a hospital on 25 July, canceling all promotional duties including her headline spot at last night's MTV 20th birthday party. When worldpop conducted a rare interview with Mariah Carey just three weeks ago, the singer seemed in good spirits. However, Mariah did speak candidly about her life and her state of mind.

"I think I am happy at the moment," she said, but admitted that achieving inner peace is one of her remaining ambitions. "My ambitions are to take a vacation, to spend more time with my friends and family and have fun. To me it's less about achieving something material, it's more about achieving peace within myself," she said. Mariah also told us that she does not need expensive gifts to make her happy, "Anything can make me happy from literally like a Jack In The Box or a teddy bear or a card, little things that aren't necessarily what people would expect."

We also asked Mariah Carey about Backstreet Boy AJ McLean's recent admission to rehab and she was open about how she tries to keep sane in such a demanding industry. "For me personally I work really hard because I come from a background where I didn't have a lot of money," she said. "I think the reason I stay grounded is because I don't think I'm bigger than life. We're all human and once you forget that that's when you lose touch with reality and you get yourself in trouble."

But Mariah did hint that her perfectionist nature is to blame for her exhaustion. "It's not like I want to live in the studio," she sighed. "All people who don't write their own songs have to do is show up, sing the song and leave. I get so involved in the record that I end up staying in the studio until five in the morning."

Many thanks to Alex from Mariah 4 life.
