Mariah's Christian connection

Jody McBrayer
Despite her rap-demeanor, often-provocative lyrics and her not-so-Church-like outfits, avid Christians are very much into Mariah Carey's music. In fact, Jody McBrayer, who is recognized as one-fourth of Avalon (one of the most popular and talented groups in Christian music), is one of her biggest fans. As announced in June, McBrayer had covered Carey's song "There For Me" for his upcoming solo debut, "This Is Who I Am". The idea all came about last winter when McBrayer picked up a copy of Carey's "Never Too Far/Hero Medley" single and discovered it's b-side, which has come to be his heartfelt confidence in keeping the memory of his father alive. For McBrayer, the song acknowledges that both God and his father's spirit will always be near.

This isn't the first time McBrayer has been affiliated with one of the diva's tracks. In 2000, Avalon covered the Carey-penned song "Jesus Born On This Day" for their Christmas album, "Joy". The original version, recorded by Carey herself, was released five years earlier for her seasonal LP "Merry Christmas". In addition to Carey, McBrayer also enjoys the sounds of Anita Baker, Whitney Houston, and Faith Evans. Be sure to check out his soul efforts on his debut "This Is Who I Am" - due out September 24.

Many thanks to Mariah Land.
