Carey's comeback

For Mariah Carey's first recording since her troubles of a year or so ago - being dropped by her old label, checking into a psychiatric center that specializes in treating substance abuse problems - her new label tried the captive-audience approach, renting the Hayden Planetarium at the American Museum of Natural History and ushering the crowd into assigned seats.

"We chose this venue so people could listen to the album instead of hanging around drinking and talking over the music," said Lyor Cohen, the chief executive of the Island Def Jam Music Group and the person who signed her to a $20 million contract after she left EMI. For her part, Ms. Carey, left, brushed aside comparisons to Kelly Clarkson, the winner of "American Idol", who has her own chart-leading recording. "I think she's got more of a Celine type of thing going on," Ms. Carey said.
