Mariah Carey was a wild thing - and she didn't sing!

She's the biggest-selling female singer of the last decade, but Mariah Carey's school pals had no idea their friend would become a music superstar.

"We never even knew she could sing!", says Enquirer reader Chuck Sorrentino. "She wasn't in the chorus or any of the school shows."

Chuck has known Mariah since they were students together at Oldfield Middle School om Long Island, N.Y., and they both graduated from Harborfields High School in 1987. Chuck even shared a table with the future megastar and her date at the senior prom.

"A few weeks before the prom, Mariah threw a party at her house. We all paid a few dollars a head. That's how she raised the money to buy her prom dress. Mariah was very popular. She had a wild streak. She'd cut class and frequently show up late for school. On the last day of school, Mariah stood up in the cafetaria and yelled, 'Food fight!' Then she chucked some food across the lunchroom - and the fight was on!"

Mariah and Chuck were reunited last October when the star returned to her old school to tape "Mariah Carey's Homecoming Special," which aired December 14 on Fox.

"The day before the taping, Mariah asked me to show her around the school," said Chuck, who now works as a custodian at Oldfield. "Looking at me, she said, 'I know you.' Mariah remembered my name and where I used to live. Mariah said she wanted me to appear in the special. I thought it was a joke at first, but after the concert we taped a segment talking about the good times we had in school. It was a great honor to be in Mariah's special and to be remembered by her after all these years."
