Mariah flops in Chicago

Superstar singer Mariah Carey's American tour is turning into a disaster after just two dates - her Chicago, Illinois, show on Tuesday night, 29 July 2003 was a flop. Carey rescheduled her planned stadium dates earlier this year claiming she wanted more intimate shows, but this week's United Center concert suggests she may have been struggling to sell tickets.

The Chicago venue was one of the few unchanged from the original tour, and it was only half full when Carey came to town. The entire upper tier was curtained off and nearly half the loge was empty when the singer took to the stage. Meanwhile, touts outside were selling front row tickets for just $75 well under face value.

But the poor turn-out didn't seem to affect Mariah, who entered the stage from the back of the venue while singing "Heartbreaker" in a pink and silver sequined cocktail dress - one of eight costumes she donned on the night.
