Mariah boobs

Poor Mariah Carey seems to be shedding fans as regularly as she spills out of her tight little tops. The struggling diva, who once sold records by the bucketload, will be devastated that her new single It's Like That reached only No 4 in the midweek charts, selling a paltry 11,500 copies.

She splashed out £200,000 on what was supposed to be the relaunch of the year, but already her comeback is looking like a massive flop. Clearly her sexed-up, boob-flaunting image is doing nothing to turn on music-buyers.

The 35-year-old singer - now with Def Jam - has tried to model herself on younger, more popular acts such as Beyonce, by working with hip producers Kanye West and The Neptunes. But according to our record industry source she's ignoring wise advice from her entourage.

We're told: "Mariah seems intent on wearing these really skimpy tops and tiny skirts but, let's face it, she's no spring chicken. She's convinced that's a good image for her, but it's not working. Her stylist has been begging her to cover up and go for a more sophisticated look, but even this week during promotional duties the tiny tops were out again."

The latest sales figures are a huge disappointment. "It's disastrous news," says our source. "This was supposed to be the year Mariah was back at the top of the charts again. Less than 15,000 sales at this point is seen as a huge failure, and eyebrows have definitely been raised at her record company. She's tried everything to get publicity. She had a big birthday party with a ridiculous cake where she celebrated with 400 of her 'closest' pals, including Lee Ryan and Alesha Dixon, in a bid to drum up publicity. She's been giving interviews to anyone who'll listen, appearing on shows like Ant and Dec's Saturday Night Takeaway and cd:uk, but none of it's made much of a difference."

At the Capital Radio Awards flunkies, desperate to see a snap of Mariah in the papers, begged photographers to wait for the singer, who was running more than an hour and a half late. Many in the industry now see her new album Emancipation Of Mimi as the last roll of the dice for Carey, who in her heyday scooped Grammy awards and sold millions of albums.

"Her career nose-dived after her dire movie Glitter and its terrible soundtrack," says our insider. "She was released from her contract by EMI, and her follow-up album Charmbracelet failed to set the world alight either."

Carey shot to fame in the early 90s after marrying Sony boss Tommy Mottola, whom she met at an industry party. But they drifted apart, with the singer saying their relationship was more like "brother and sister". Mottola disagreed with her raunchy "street" image and tried to stop her working with rappers such as Puff Daddy. Should have listened to your ex-hubby, luv.
