Mariah Carey says she looks at tabloid stories as comedy

In her E! reality special, Mariah Carey: Uncut, the R&B diva revealed she's learned to deal with tabloid stories and rumors about her by laughing at them. She says, "We look at celebrities, we put them on a pedestal and we love to tear them down. I can't worry about people's rumors and little stories that they make up every day about me. It's comedy at this point." The program went behind the scenes with Mariah Carey as she promoted and launched her current album, The Emancipation Of Mimi. E! will air an encore presentation of the show this Wednesday (May 25) at 10 p.m.

Among her revelations:

On performing on TV: "I'm super-critical of my performances, so it's really tough. When you're in a TV studio... it's so kind of like you can hear a pin drop. I end up just being a little more inhibited because it's not like being on stage with your fans right there, you're really separated by the cameras and the whole thing."

On her nickname, Mimi: "It's really not that deep. It's just a nickname. The people who use the name for me are people who really love and care about me."

On struggling on the way up: "My whole life felt like a struggle because I had a lot of situations where I really, really relied on music. It was a saving grace for me. This is going to get me where I need to go. I know what it was like to have only one pair of shoes, I know what it was like to waitress - although that was a very short very bleak period of my life."

On her "breakdown" in 2001: "There was no nervous breakdown. I was exhausted, I was emotionally depleted, I was at the end of my rope in a lot of ways. I did need to take a break. I had good times, I had difficult times and whatever it is, God doesn't put anything in front of us that we can't handle."

Mariah will perform on the Oprah show Tuesday (May 24). She's also scheduled to perform on the 2005 MTV Movie Awards on June 9. Mariah's current single, "We Belong Together", is Number One this week on the Billboard Hot 100 Airplay chart. The Emancipation Of Mimi is at Number Three on the Billboard 200 albums chart.
