Gordon's kitchen nightmare

Mariah Carey is well known for her amazing demands - so all hands were on deck at Mayfair hotel Claridge's last night. Celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay - who seems to spend more time these days at other people's restaurants telling them how awful their food is - was spotted in his work clothes outside the hotel's Gordon Ramsay restaurant, looking uncharacteristically nervous. He was no doubt there to make sure everything ran like clockwork for her arrival.

Mariah made a typically grand entrance around 2.30am today, looking stunning in patent black boots, a tight striped dress showing off her curves, oversized sunglasses and clutching a bouquet of pink roses. The star, who was travelling light by her standards with just four bags, was greeted by a swarm of fans and paparazzi but quickly moved inside.

Mariah, 38 (it was her birthday on Thursday), has a reputation for being one of the most demanding stars, and she unleashed the diva before she even hit UK soil. When Radio 1 DJ Reggie Yates accidentally underestimated the amount of albums she has sold at 80 million, she replied: "I don't know if that is accurate," before terminating the interview.

The last time she was promoting an album in London a few years back, she reportedly made her limousine circle the block until a red carpet was laid out at her hotel, and two-foot candles put in place. Sources say she demands that her staff must tell her she is beautiful every day when she wakes up.

So you could imagine Gordon's relief when the perfectionist pop star went straight up to bed. She was in Paris yesterday, flying to a private terminal in Luton (thank God it wasn't T5). Last month, Mariah made the incredible claim that she isn't a demanding person, adding: "The actual definition [of a diva] is 'a talented female singer'. Definition two is 'a difficult woman who is successful', I believe. So I take it as a compliment."

Mariah will be appearing in Selfridges on Oxford Street from 5pm today. She will be signing copies of Touch My Body, the first song from her new album E=MC2 - and has promised a "spectacular" entry.
