Mariah Carey: History in the making

Mariah Carey's strong media blitz sure did pay off in a major way last week. Appearing on NBC's Saturday Night Live, MTV's The Hills, American Idol, and The Oprah Winfrey Show helped land Carey's latest album "E=MC2" on top of the Billboard 200 albums chart selling 463,000 units.

The songstress also made history with her 11th studio album. According to SoundScan, Mariah's latest effort has outsold all of her previous efforts including her 2005 critically-acclaimed album, "The Emancipation of Mimi". The album, which debuted at #1 with 403,800 copies sold, has been certified six times platinum, according to the RIAA. Scoring her a 2006 Grammy award for "Best Contemporary R&B Album".

Island Def Jam Chairman Antonio "L.A." Reid seems to be "amazed" over Carey's most recent accomplishment. "Mariah's an inspiration, the true definition of a star," he said. "She continues to amaze us with every incredible new album she creates."

The label head also believes her consistency combined with talent has made the singer an incredible force within the music industry. "Now Mariah has added another plateau of success to what has become her virtually unapproachable track record on charts around the world. She proves beyond a doubt that with talent, ambition, and sheer force of will, all things are possible."

Earlier this month Mariah also made history with her first single from "E=MC2", "Touch My Body" becoming her 18th #1 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 charts, surpassing Elvis Presley for second place leaving the Beatles at number one, with 20.

In addition to releasing her new single "Bye Bye", the mega-platinum, award-winning superstar will continue to promote "E=MC2" this Friday, April 25th when she returns to Good Morning America for a live outdoor concert with New York's Times Square as her backdrop. Three years to the month since she first shut down traffic outside the show's studios on 44th Street to celebrate the release week of "The Emancipation Of Mimi".
