Mariah Carey to release "Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel"

Superstar diva Mariah Carey will release her 12th studio album on September 29th by the name of Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel. Recorded between January and August, Mariah Carey's release date has been pushed back several times due to not finishing the album on time as planned. However, Carey is expected to take advantage of her release date and maximize her sales potential, and if history repeats itself, she will sell more than 400,000 copies in her first week.

Opening with "Betcha Gon Know", Mariah's Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel, the song isn't just an R&B tune filled with her later hip-hop fast paced phrasing. She uses both that and actually sings with her sultry smoky voice, a perfect way to open an album in which she uses the title within the song. Following is her single "Obsessed" that has given her her 40th Billboard Hot 100 entry, debuting at No. 11 and peaking thus far at No. 7.

Mariah Carey's latest album does include many heavy R&B riffs and beats, including "h.a.t.e.u." In a slow tempo, she's not ready to let go of her love not understanding what happened. Somehow they knocked their love out of them. Somehow, she's looking forward to hating him, facing him and breaking him down and getting over it because it's really just a lost cause. She can remember the memories and pause them but can't make them stay.

Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel continues with the heavy clicks and pops of R&B music with "Candy Bling" and "Ribbon". However, a Mariah Carey album would not be a Mariah Carey album without some kind of ballad. "Angels Cry" is her signature sound. It tells the story of a lost love, trying to survive and wanting it to rekindle and work things out. She's willing to do whatever it takes and when they said goodbye, she felt the angels cry believing true love is a gift. "Bring it back and we gon' make it right. I'm on the edge just trying to survive. As the angels cry. Baby I miss you," she sings.

Mariah Carey has covered famous rock songs in the past ("Bringing On the Heartbreak") and she's done it again. Covering Foreigner's "I Want to Know What Love Is", Carey gives her own spin on the song with a light piano riff and a more tame ballad like chorus. Using her wispy breaths, she softly sings the chorus "I want to know what love is, I want you to show me." There's no guitars here and takes on an R&B feel and is the second single taken from Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel. The song showcases her famous high notes and "dolphin squeal" but fails to replicate anything of the original. The cover song is more or less bland, but a wise choice to make it the closer of the album.

Carey's album consists of 17 tracks, including several interludes. Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel will arrive in stores September 29.
