Mad about Mariah
 | Please tell me more about Mariah Carey! - Megan Dear Megan, we're also mad about Mariah (remember our pic of tvplus staffers Sieraaj and Clayton with their favourite diva in Cape Town in April last year?). She was born on 27 March 1970 (she turns 40 this month!) in New York City. Her parents divorced when she was three, but her family was still victimised for their mixed-race heritage (her mother Patricia is white, and of Irish descent, while her late father Alfred was black, and of African and Venezuelan descent).
Her mom, an opera singer, says baby Mariah used to mimic her singing (which explains those high notes!). Since her 1990 debut, Mariah has scored 18 American number ones, more than any other solo artist, and is the only artist who currently has the potential to beat The Beatles' record of 20 number ones. She's an actress too, and you should catch her in a small, award-winning role in the Oscar-nominated drama, Precious (which opened in SA on 5 March).
Mariah hasn't performed in SA yet - and she likely won't tour again soon. Mimi (as her friends call her) has just finished a US tour, and has hinted that she and hubby Nick Cannon are going to focus on baby-making (or adopting) for now.
