About Skip from United States: Lamb since the "Vision of Love" cassette single of '90!

"Prisoner" lip sync (83,076) by Skip from United States
I haven't posted in a long while, but wanted to share a Mariah moment I had with my friends over the hot weekend. God, I wish she'd do this song in concert. (Also, never gonna happen.)

Carey-O-Gay (60,310) by Skip from United States
Hey lambs, I haven't posted in a long while, but I wanted to share a little promo for a web series I've got coming up because I made sure to throw a Mariah Carey reference in there. Check it out and hopefully it'll make you laugh.

In defense of the divas (54,835) by Skip from United States
I think Madonna should be able to act however she wants. I think Mariah should be able to wear whatever she wants. I think all of our divas should make whatever music they want. And I don't think we should say what's right or wrong based on their age or size or any other criteria like that. For any of us to sit here and say, "that's inappropriate" or "that's disgusting" I find to be quite negative and stifling. We certainly don't have to like what they create or wear. (I didn't like the "Infinity" video, but that was because I thought it was poorly made, not because she was, for example, "too old to be on a dating app" or something.) I just personally feel it's not for us to criticize how someone else chooses to live, dress, or express themselves at any age or any size. My two cents.

Infinity video (54,082) by Skip from United States
Oof, that video hurt. I could already imagine the field day comedians would have doing a commentary track for it. It seemed pretty clear they just didn't shoot that much. Besides the concert footage, there was no coverage, no close-ups to cut to, not even multiple set ups to get variation. The closet bit was so weird. Why was she singing to her ex from her closet? And it was edited poorly, too. (Not that I blame the editor entirely, they probably used every second of footage that was shot.) The bit where she's taking a selfie with a dog (good lord, there's a bit where she takes a selfie with a dog) goes on for several seconds too long. I think if this had been a major motion picture it would have never gotten released, or at least Brett Ratner would have removed his name from it. I've been a fan literally since the first single in 1990 but this is yet another strike in addition to the many that have accumulated over the past two years. I usually defend her, but I'm tired. When JD says Mariah doesn't take her career seriously, I have to wonder why I take being a fan seriously. I'm ranting, but I feel burned.

Infinity (re-edit) (52,652) by Skip from United States
Just saying thanks again for the nice comments about the "Infinity (re-edit)", and thank you to the new comments from MIAM and IHeartMC. I hope those of you who asked for the MP3 received it with no problem. I really thought it might get, like, 30 plays on SoundCloud and it's at something like 1,600 now. So cool.

My "Infinity" re-edit (52,598) by Skip from United States
I can't even know what to say, lambs. I was so nervous to post my edit for fear that other fans might think, "What, he thinks he knows how Mariah's song should go? Isn't that up to Mariah?" Lol. Your overwhelmingly positive response has totally hit my sweet spot. Thank you for that. It's not even that I don't like the original version of the song because I do. I feel like the original is a car driving down a road, except it keeps making sharp turns and changing speeds and you're not sure where you're going. I just wanted to make the journey more smooth, if you will. Christopher, I'm glad you liked the second verse coming first. I feel an opening line of "How I say this?" is a better set up than "Name hold weight like kilos." But my main point was to put lyrics that were easier to understand first so the listener wouldn't tune out. Jono and Jake, glad you're feeling the outro. The original ended too abruptly for me. Rene, believe it or not, I use the audio track of my old iMovieHD program. I've made tons of non-stop DJ mixes using that program and a lot of cut and paste precision. Then I send it into GarageBand to turn it into an MP3. Thanks again, lambs. You made my night.

Infinity re-edit / Bill from UK (52,553) by Skip from United States
Thanks for listening to the Infinity re-edit, Bill. I know what you mean about missing the opening Ooh, Aah's. Since I repeated the "Duh" bridge, I had to lose some things to keep it under four minutes. Plus, when I first heard the song, I felt like it took a while to really get going so I wanted an explosion right at the top. It was just something fun to do, and I'm glad you think it works overall.

Infinity (re-edit) (52,522) by Skip from United States
While I enjoy "Infinity" and appreciate her willingness to take chances, I felt the thing that was keeping me from getting into it the most was the song's structure. So I did a fan-made re-edit. You can listen to it here. Made with love. No disrespect to Mariah's immense artistry.

WBT video (52,197) by Skip from United States
I was just watching the We Belong Together video on a big screen for the first time and I noticed, at the very end, when she's getting into the car and the camera is behind her, it's so clearly a stand-in in a wig. The blonde curls? Oh my gosh. It made me laugh. I love that song still. Timeless.

Original #1s (52,007) by Skip from United States
I'm sure the copies on Amazon are just the remaining copies from its last pressing. I don't think this version will be hard to come by since so many were pressed. I just noticed it was gone from digital platforms which implies it will no longer be newly available on CD. And I wondered if any other Mariah album had ever officially gone out of print, whether copies can still be found or not.

Original #1s (51,996) by Skip from United States
Has anyone else noticed that the original #1s is no longer on iTunes or Spotify, etc? Is this a recent development? I'm assuming yes, because of the new version. And it makes me wonder if this is the first Mariah album to go completely out of print.

Disc one (51,982) by Skip from United States
If that picture is indeed showing the hits package as having a disc one, my thoughts for this are that it will either come with a CD of "Infinity" remixes a la "Obsessed" with MOAIA, or they've split the hits onto two discs because double-album packages count as two for the RIAA. It will look like more impressive sales if they split it. But honestly, all 19 could fit on one disc. The Japanese version of the original #1's album has 19 tracks, and the Japanese version of TEOM deluxe had 20.

Track list / Someday (51,780) by Skip from United States
I get why there's only one new song on this CD. I imagine they figure most people who buy it will be doing so at her store inside Caesar's Palace after seeing her perform these very songs in concert. And upside is, if they're only including this one song, they will be putting their all behind it to give it promotion. There is no "second single" to fall back on. That said, my disappointment in this track listing is in the version of "Someday" included. The MTV Unplugged version never hit number one. It wasn't even a single. I'm guessing this version was included because Mariah, ever concerned about appearances, felt the original version's production was embarrassing to her, just as she included live versions of her early songs as music videos on the original #1's DVD. But I absolutely love the original version of "Someday". If nothing else, including the 7" Jackswing single version would have been both more true to what actually hit number one as well as creating a bit of enticement for the fans, as it hasn't been released on CD since 1991. Including the live MTV version just destroys the truth of this legacy chronology, and therein lies my disappointment.

Nostalgia (51,430) by Skip from United States
Interesting question, Kate. For me, I was in grade school when Mariah debuted, so I have memories tied to all of her releases. I don't think nostalgia plays into my feelings for the albums now, except maybe for "Music Box" - it always takes me back to high school. There's something about the melancholy in that album I connected to at the time and, while I don't feel that way now, it was definitely my "teen angst" album. The real nostalgia comes from remembering hearing Mariah constantly on the radio. I remember when the DJ on KIIS-FM here in Los Angeles premiered "Emotions" and liked it so much that he played it twice in a row. I've never heard a DJ do that, before or since. I remember when radio couldn't wait for new singles, so they played "Prisoner", "Now That I Know", and started spinning "Without You" long before "Hero" had even peaked. And I certainly remember the Daydream era, since that was the absolute pinnacle of her career. The constant airplay for the three commercial singles plus "Forever", not to mention the times I heard "Open Arms" played when it wasn't even a single here in America. Point is, that's the nostalgia for me. I haven't seen another artist have that much constant success with albums and singles since then. They were them good ol' days.

New single (51,317) by Skip from United States
A friend of mine posted on Facebook that she's working the audition for dancers for Mariah's new video, which means an uptempo jam. I can't wait to hear this one.

Jamaica / Brian Wilson (49,540) by Skip from United States
From watching the "Fantasty" video from the Jamaica concert, it seems to me Mariah was singing live but her mic was not being broadcast through the speakers, and she also could not hear the pre-recorded playback the audience was hearing in her ear pieces. The fact that at the very end of the song her mic goes live and we hear her seems to prove this was the issue. Basically, the sound engineer blew it. And it baffles me how often this happens with her. She seems to be unable to go on stage without having an issue with her mic, her mic pack, her pre-recorded playback, her backup singers, her in-ear devices. I truly think she just doesn't rehearse with the technical crew enough, but that's just me guessing. Also, to the Brian Wilson suggestion. I get it. He's an absolute genius and it's akin to Rihanna working with Paul McCartney. It would be interesting, for sure, but obviously unlikely.

MTV Unplugged / debut showcase (49,408) by Skip from United States
Both of these unedited recordings were such an unexpected pleasure to listen to today. I loved hearing the MTV show unmixed as well because of new sounds you could pick out. What sounds like a harpsichord in "I'll Be There" was so beautiful. Finding out Mariah's mom was in the audience? Awesome. But I think the thing I noticed about these performances the most were that she wasn't always spot on - and here we are 25 years later, freaking out if she misses a note or her voice cracks when the same things happened here. We just never got to hear them unfiltered. And the best thing is hearing these classic songs performed with a live band instead of the synth produced sounds of the record. I love MC with a live band.

Lambs rocking out to make it happen (48,117) by Skip from United States
This makes me happy. I'm sure we've all done this at some point.

Lullaby of Birdland / leaked tracklist (47,587) by Skip from United States
Now that Mariah has performed "Lullaby of Birdland" on tour, I have to think it only solidifies the validity of that leaked tracklist for the initial version of the album, back when it was called "The Art of Letting Go". "Lullaby of Birdland" was listed right there as track 6. And especially since it was listed as an interlude and her performance of it was under three minutes, it all just seems to be further proof. Anyway, it just has me excited to think that all those other songs listed are sitting somewhere, complete and unreleased. And I'm just hoping we'll get to hear them all sooner than later.

Bill from UK / Emotions (46,872) by Skip from United States
Thank you, Bill. It was actually me who asked about the Emotions remix. I'm so happy to hear there's a CD out there with this mix on it so I can finally get it in higher quality. And thank you for the smart deduction that those extra lyrics must have been edited or from a different take. Smart detective work there.

Emotions C&C Club Mix No. 1 (46,840) by Skip from United States
In my Emotions anniversary celebration yesterday, I listened to some of the era's remixes, and I realized I had a couple questions about the C&C Club mixes of the title track, specifically the one entitled "Club Mix No. 1". I only have this mix on a vinyl and was wondering, does anyone know if it was released on a CD single anywhere? Is it the only remix to feature the additional lyrics towards the end ("Got me feelin' so good, you got me feelin' so nice, baby, you got me feelin' so good, baby")? And do we know if these lyrics were actually edited out of the original version? Considering how they are placed just before the whistle note section, it feels like maybe they were. I would love anybody's knowledge on this. Thanks.

Why not an album of new Mariah dance remixes? (46,128) by Skip from United States
I wanna preface this by saying I love Mariah when she's in her R&B zone and I love when she's belting her ballads. But I have to look at where she's had her greatest success lately, which is the dance charts. The fact that "You're Mine" and "Triumphant" both went to #1 on the Dance/Club Play chart and barely registered on any other American chart makes me wish she'd cater to the audience who clearly is still most wanting to listen to her. This happens to many of the classic "divas" as their career progresses (Whitney, Madonna, Donna Summer, etc.). As their mainstream success lessened, their dance chart success maintained or even increased. And then I see artists such as LeAnn Rimes and Amy Grant who are releasing remix albums of their past hits this month and think, "Why isn't Mariah doing that?" We've never gotten modern dance mixes of her classic hits. And songs like "Love Takes Time" or "One Sweet Day" would be blasting in clubs if they were remixed today, especially "for the nostalgia". Mariah doesn't have to live the EDM world full-time, we already know she isn't that into it. But a remix album, maybe with a brand new dance track thrown in for a single, might be a good way to jump start the pulse of her career right now. Yay/nay?

MIAM Top 5 (44,799) by Skip from United States
Love a good top 5 list. For me:
5. Supernatural - She's singing to her kids and that alone gets me in the heart. But the "Talkin' 'bout our our-our-our our-our our-our our looove" sticks in my head.
4. #Beautiful - Timeless, classic, yet fresh. Love it.
3. You Don't Know What To Do - It just makes me happy.
2. Meteorite - This makes me wish she'd get with Giorgio Moroder and do some classic hard disco a la Donna Summer. Something like "I Feel Love" or "Our Love". But this'll definitely do for now.
1. Heavenly - The key changes at the end seem to parallel the strength that she's gaining throughout the song and it just gives me chills for days.
I love the entire album, though, and I feel you all on the love for Make It Look Good. I totally dig it.

Did I Do That (44,761) by Skip from United States
Lol to Bill from UK. I have never liked "Did I Do That?" either. Although I will find myself singing lyrics from it now and then. "Conversations painfully weak, you were much better off when you didn't speak." I love that. But yeah, the song. Not so much. But seek out the DJ Stylz Remix of that song, it actually makes the song good. Production is everything.

Bonus tracks (44,671) by Skip from United States
Quick thoughts on the bonus tracks on MIAM. I agree that the Angels Advocate leftovers are underwhelming. Particularly "Betcha Gon' Know". I was so hoping the demo that leaked ("I Checked") was going to be the true Part 2 to this song. But I am happy to have at least finally heard them. I'm more interested in her selection of "America the Beautiful". If she did choose to include this as the closing number as a callback to her debut performance of the song at the NBA finals, I can't helping thinking how incredible it would have been for her to include the original demo of "Vision of Love". She's mentioned in several interviews that she prefers the demo, feels it has more soul and is less produced. And that version would really be the true start to her career. Don't you all think that would've been a pretty cool bonus track?
